Young’s Post-Release Tasting Set for May 20th

Now that the release dust has settled, we’ll be hosting a Young’s Tasting at Carpe Vino on Tuesday evening, May 20th, from 6 to 8 p.m. Cost to participate is $10 per person, but as always, if you are a Carpe Vino Wine Club member, you entry is complimentary. We’ll be offering six wines for tasting and we’ll have the typical munchies available for palate cleansing.

While we always look forward to Young’s spring release, this year is a more somber time. That’s because the winery’s owner, Steven Young, recently passed away suddenly at the age of only 50. He leaves his wife, Annette, and two children.

Steven bought the winery property in 1992 and releasedd his first vintage for sale in 1994. His father, Stell, handles head winemaking duties, so our hope is the traditions will continue at Young’s, which now produces about 6,000 cases of wine annually.

For our tasting, we’ll be presenting six Young’s wines, all 2006 vintages: Zinfandel ($27.95), Barbera ($27.95), Syrah ($25.95), Sangiovese ($25.95), Petite Sirah ($25.95), and Estate Cabernet Sauvignon ($42). We’ll be offering mix & match case discounts of 10%, 15% for wine club members.

Zin Lovers Wake Up! 2003 Alderbrook Zinfandel $19.99/bottle or $15.99/bottle by the case

Drew came across a similar wine, the 2003 Alderbrook Zinfandel (Dry Creek), and he was a bit skeptical until he tasted it. Though it is pushing five years in the bottle, the time has been well spent. He liked it so much he bought out the remaining 15 cases available in distribution. . .but now we're down to just 10 cases. The cool thing is the Adlerbrook Zinfandel is one of the best scoring of all zins, consistently garnering 90 points or more. We're offering the last of it at, as the headline says, at $19.99 per bottle, or $15.99 if you purcahse a solid case. We have the stuff open for tasting, but you can call 530-823-0320 to reserve your case.

WineryTasting Notes: This dark rich wine issues ripe blackberry aromas in concert with black spice notes including anise and cola. The mouth feel is soft and juicy with hints of pepper and more blackberry and plum fruit flavors. The toasty oak finish is given a touch of warmth from the 14.2% alcohol. Experience the Zin! Only 452 cases were produced!

Looking for Tasty Daily Drinkers? Look No More!

Life is good because the Orphan from Justin Wines is back. We’re only able to get a limited amount of this stuff, so our first five cases went to our beloved Wine Club members (you could be one, too!). We received more this week, so we’re offering for general sale at $16.99 per bottle. Here is the description from our tasting notes provided in our March shipment; first come, first served:

“One of our most popular wines in the store last year, we could have sold pallets of the stuff if the supply at the winery had not run dry. It’s called the “Orphan” because it is blended from literally whatever is not used in the winery (but we know it includes Cab and Syrah). This is some tasty juice, we promise, and only 3,000 cases were produced. If you like this year’s vintage, better take advantage because we requested 10 cases and we’re only getting six.

Winery Tasting Notes: Inky black in color with a bright, garnet hue, the 2006 Orphan’s appearance is lively and youthful. Ripe aromas of black cherry, plum and fig fill the nose and combine with spice, leather and a touch of cedar resulting from the new French and American oak. The palate begins soft, yet driven by bright red fruit and a hint of minerality. Layers of earth and a light touch of tannin structure showcase the balanced blend of Rhone and Bordeaux varieties.”

We’ve also been on the lookout for tasty, inexpensive chardonnays, and we found a winner in the Red Belly Black Chardonnay from Australia. The winery is named for a snake indegenious to the bushland regions of south Australia. It’s just $10 a bottle, and discounts down to $8 on April 15th (only).

This is no over-the-top style of California’s oaky-buttery stuff. It is fruit driven, crisper and cleaner. The fruit speaks, though not in stereo. . .what do you want for 10 bucks? It is a great daily sippin’ wine if you appreciate the more austere style.

Winery tasting notes: This wine is bright pale straw in color with green hints, and shows abundant white peach and citrus on the nose. The palate is soft and luscious with nectarine and lemon flavors being supported by spicy vanillin oak.
