Sign up a Buddy, Earn a $25 Gift Card

TomatoesWhat is more compelling these days than “word of mouth” promotion, when existing customers tell their friends about a business or service with which they have had a great experience? That’s why we are launching our “Refer-a-Friend” program exclusively for existing Wine Club members. Think of them as “Buddy Bucks,” the 25 wine dollars you will earn when the friend you invite signs up as a Carpe Vino Wine Club member.

Here’s how it works: Simply click here and you will be directed to another page. Fill out the form by providing the email addresses (separated by commas) of up to 10 of your wine-loving friends. You can recommend as many friends as you like, but the form can only handle 10 at a time. Keep in mind that your friends don’t have to live nearby because we can ship just about anywhere.

Ca’ Momi Could be the Answer to Fred’s Red

TomatoesWe’re always on the prowl for great, affordable, daily-drinking wines priced under $10 that you’ve never heard of before. For the longest time, we’ve been selling Fred’s Red—a zinfandel/syrah blend from Mendocino County—to help fill this slot. It’s priced at just $10, or $8 per bottle when you purchase twelve, and we’ve sold hundreds of cases of this tasty juice.

At a recent industry tasting in Old Sacramento at the Firehouse Restaurant, I was drawn to the table of Ca’ Momi Winery of Napa Valley, a new player with just three vintages under its belt. The enterprise is owned and operated by three Italians—Valentina Gulo-Migotto, Dario De Conti and Stefano Migott. Oddly enough, under “People” on the winery web site, the “General Counsel” is the fourth person listed (should it be consigliere?).

Although they are Italian immigrants, the winemakers at Ca’ Momi focus on typical California varietals—cab, merlot, zin and chard. What caught my interest immediately, however, was a little blend called Rosso di Napa, a blend of 30% cab, 30% merlot, 30% zin and 10% petite sirah, with all fruit sourced from Napa. This 2009 vintage comes in at just 13.9% alcohol, allowing the rich fruit flavors to shine through clearly. And, the wine is packaged with a unique closure called a “Nova Twist,” rendering the bottle 100% recyclable and about one-third the carbon footprint of a metal screw cap.

This is a great little package that retails at the winery’s “Enoteca” at the Oxbow Public Market in Napa for just $10.99. That’s our price at Carpe Vino, too, unless you purchase a case—in which case—you’ll save 27% because the price goes down to just $7.99 per bottle. Out the door, a case with tax is just $102.83.

Winery Tasting Notes: “Bright strawberry and raspberry flavors offering impressive roundness and a velvety texture. Full mouth feel, medium-bodied and complex with loads of fruit. This very well could become your next “house” and in-law wine. . .it’s an affordable crowd pleaser.

If you’d like to go a bit upscale, however, we’re also bringing in the Ca’ Momi 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley), an impressive, robust wine that belies its frugal pricing. This wine won double gold at the 2011 San Francisco International Wine Competition, an amazing performance for a new winery at a price point of just $19.99. . .the retail price at Carpe Vino. Purchase six bottles , however, and you’ll save 25% when the price goes down to just $14.99 each. How do those Moffats do it, anyway?

Winery Tasting Notes: “This wonderfully ripe wine has a rich palate, a complex nose and lots of layers, providing depth and a nice, intense color. This cabernet is soft, rich in cassis, cherry, spice and chocolate, anchored with warm, earthy tannins—balancing nicely with sweet vanilla and toasted oak.”

These two wines represent huge values, but what is equally amazing is just 1,000 cases of each were made, so it’s unlikely you’ll find this stuff in Safeway. . .for now, at least.
