Excuse Our Dust
We launched this site more than three years ago, and now it's time for a
face lift. We're just finishing our latest expansion, and now we need to
feature our new restaurant, art gallery and new staff members.
We're adding lots of new content and new features, so be patient.
Thanks! |
| The
"Jerusalem Cricket" is not a Computer Bug I'm
told people love to read "Window on Old Town" because of the quirky
things we report about. If you are one of those, you'll love this. Drew
and I were getting the store ready to open a couple of days ago, and he was moving
some wine cases when he cried out, "What the hell is this?" From behind
the case he kicked out the largest bug I've ever seen (as "big as a Buick"
to steal a description from Woody Allen). While it was still alive, it was struggling
and appeared to be at death's door. | "Why
don't we put it in a plastic cup?" suggested Drew.
"No, why don't
you put it in a cup?" I responded, with more of an order rather than a question.
We didn't
know what to make of this creature, which has a humanoid head.
It almost seemed to be waving at us. "Let me out and
I'll sting your ass to death."
Laura called Clark, our on-retainer bug assasins, and they
hurried over to inspect. As it turns out, this nasty looking
varmint was a Jerusalem Cricket, about two inches long, non-poisonous,
but capable of clamping on to its victims with vile claws.
They don't fly, and usually live in moist conditions.

Our specimen
has left this world, but we have him on display if you would
like to view his remains. He's resting next to the tarantula
we caught, on the same shelf with our giant bumble bee.

Up Close and Personal: Isn't this just disgusting? Brings
new meaning to the term "pub crawl." Combating such
creatures is what we are willing to do to help make Carpe
Vino a safe place for you, our beloved customers, to enjoy
wine. New rule at the wine bar: Ladies are requested not to
wear open-toed shoes.
