The San Francisco Chronicle Profiles Carpe Vino in Travel
Section

Two of the area’s old-school
eateries were mentioned in the piece—Ikeda’s (the
legendary fruit stand and burger joint on I-80) and Katrina’s
(a breakfast lover’s Mecca), as was Power’s Mansion
Inn (Auburn’s only B&B). But it was Carpe Vino that
led the piece, dominated coverage and was peppered with accolades.
Said Ducklow: “Just about anything tastes good after
a long day of outdoor fun, but we could have eaten at Carpe
Vino every night for a week and it wouldn’t have gotten
old.” Later, she added, “It was a meal that easily
could have held its own in any food-obsessed city.”
The story also described the old saloon’s design features,
detailed the writer’s delight sampling through the menu
and it discussed the high quality of local wines. Carpe Vino
also helped change Ducklow’s impression of Auburn from
being simply a pit stop for gas to a true destination. “Many
people know about Ikeda’s. . . but fewer know that Auburn
has enough good eats, from upscale to down home, to take up
an entire weekend—with excellent wine to boot.”
