Silver Oak Winemaker Dinner Price Fixed When we announced our plan to host a winemaker dinner featuring the famed Silver Oak winery (July 26th at 6 p.m.), we knew we’d get a good response because this legendary vintner has such a wide and loyal following. Quite frankly, though, we did not anticipate the flood of immediate responses that poured in.
The problem in providing more details is we need to get sample bottles of wine for tasting so that Courtney an Eric can plan our menu. The juice should be here Friday, so we’re hoping to taste over the weekend and then have a firm plan to report.
We have made some progress, however. We’re setting the price for the dinner at $150 per person plus tax and tip; $125 per person plus, plus for Wine Club members (another great reason to join—you save $50). We’ll be presenting five courses paired with five wines, four of which are from Silver Oak: two cabs, the Twomey Merlot and the winery’s very first vintage of Pinot Noir (and a non-Silver Oak wine white to be named).
Cubs Play the Giants Next Week, so We’re Closed Your first-place Cubbies are in San Francisco for a three-game set next week, so we’re closing the joint. Drew and I are headed for the friendly confines of AT&T Park, so we’re shut!
Not exactly. We will be closed on July 1, 2, 4 and 5 (open only on July 3rd for the wine sale described above), but we’re shutting down because Chefs Courtney and Eric are on vacation, plus the holiday falling on a weekend just wrecks business.
We will re-open on our regular schedule starting Tuesday, July 8th. Sorry for any inconvenience. Have a happy and sane holiday!
“Wine-less” Wine Thing set for July 3rd If you are planning a big holiday barbeque over the Fourth of July, the patriotic thing to do is buy your wine at Carpe Vino on July 3rd and save enough to fill your fuel tank with white wine (my old man’s term for “regular” gasoline). All day next Thursday, we’ll be offering high-octane “Wine Thing” discounts on all wine purchases.
Those of you who are regulars here know that Wine Thing is our biggest event of the year when we open upwards of 100 bottles of wine and offer discounts ranging up to 24% when you purchase two cases—24 bottles—mix and match. The big difference with this event is we’re not opening the wine; we’re just offering the discounts on any IN-STOCK wines.
100 New Wine Club Members Can’t Be Wrong. . . it’s a Freakin’ Smokin’ Deal Since we added an entire suite of new benefits to the Carpe Vino Wine Club, we’ve seen an incredible surge in new memberships. . .more than 100 so far. The huge draw right now is that by becoming a member, you save $40 on entrance fees for two people to Wine Thing and you get in an hour early. But that’s just the beginning. You also get:
-10% off any purchase for wine you purchase to take home; 15% on cases (standard discount is 10%)
-Free entry to all public tasting events at Carpe Vino (two per membership)
-$5 “restaurant charge” for wine purchased at Carpe Vino to be consumed in the building is waived
-$25 corkage fee for wine you bring into Carpe Vino is waived
-Service fee to use the “Wine Mine” for special events is waived
-Invitations to Wine Club Member-only events
-Invitations to Wine Club Member-only winery tours
-First crack at limited production wines
There is no charge to join; you just agree to purchase a minimum of 12 bottles per year that we select. You can opt out any time you wish.
Cheap Eats at Carpe Vino! Okay, so maybe they aren’t exactly “cheap;” perhpas “great values" is a better choice of words. Check it out, kids, you wanted more food at the wine bar and the chefs have responded with--get this--barbequed baby-back pork ribs, slow cooked with a Zinfandel BBQ sauce. KC Barbeque ain't got nothin' on this finger-lickin' delicacy available on Friday and Saturday nights only and only at the bar.
Eric has created his own sauce blended with zinfandel wine and zinfandel port. I had a spoonful, and it's "somma spicy sh!T!" You get a giant half-rack of ribs, blue cheese cole slaw and Courtney's house-made corn bread. All for just $17!
Also, Wednesday and Thursday, we offer a prix fixe, three-course dinner with a bottle of wine for two people for just $40 per person (plus tax and tip). Without the wine the cost is $35 per person. The menu changes every week, so call for details.
No Country for Wine Discounters Video Now Online More than 700 people have viewed our new video, "No Country for Wine Discounters." If you haven't, just click here (it's just four minutes long and it will blow you away).
Online Wine Shop to Open Soon We sold wine online when we first opened the shop, but we got out of the business because it was strictly a price game. Our shtick is to seek out low-production, hard-to-find, great-tasting wines at value pricing.
Long story short, we’re putting up a new wine store to feature wines tasted in our videos, Placer County wines and special values we are promoting at any given time. Our goal is to limit the number of wines available in our online store to 25 to 50 selections.
This will be a service to the many fans of Carpe Vino who live outside of the area and can’t get in to buy wine in the flesh. We’ll give it a shot and see what happens.
Look for an announcement within the next couple of weeks.
