CV Presents: Mi Sueno Winery

Every Saturday, Carpe Vino has some very special wines available for Wine Club Members. This Saturday, from 12noon to 4pm, stop by and taste the amazing wines from Mi Sueno Winery. We are featuring 4 wines from their awesome collection with a total tasting value of almost $200, that you surely won’t want to miss.  There will be a nominal tasting fee of $10-per-person, however, the good news is that we will waive the tasting charge when you purchase six or more bottles of the featured wines in any combination.  We have every expectation that our Wine Club Members will understand why we are doing this, due to value of the wines being tasted.  So, enough with the formalities, and here is this weeks stunning lineup from Mi Sueno!

2010 Mi Sueno “Los Carneros” Chardonnay (Carneros)

MSCHLCglow3.102821$37.95/bottle or $27.95/bottle on six +

Winery Tasting Notes:
“Nestled right next to the San Pablo Bay in the Los Carneros Appellation, our Tierra Blanca Vineyard couldn’t be happier to be in such a cool and beautiful climate. Round and rich, but not hollow and flabby. On the contrary, this wine yields high acidity and minerality, which contributes to its refreshing qualities. Rolando’s first four years of production were dedicated to just producing Chardonnay. While working at Chateau Potelle and Paul Hobbs, Rolando fell in love with native yeast fermentation; hence the exotic features of this wine.”

Jay’s Take: “This is the same great chardonnay that was featured earlier this year.  We still have the same great discount on it, but look for the winery to raise prices.  So, stock up while you can.”

2010 Mi Sueno Pinot Noir (Russian River)

MSPNRRglow1.103144$47.95/bottle or $29.95/bottle on six +

Tasting Notes:
A seductive blend of freshly plucked rose petals, pomegranate, ripe red fruit and roasted almonds offers a dazzling and senses tingling bouquet. A silky, velvety mouth-feel is balanced and pleasing to the very last drop.

Jay’s Take: “Beautifully crafted classic pinot noir from the Russian River AVA.  Great fruit and balance with that silky texture so desired in pinot noir.”

2010 Mi Sueno “El Llano” Red Wine

napavalley_elllano_glow_lg.103336$42/bottleReg. Wine Club Discounts Apply

Tasting Notes:
The 2010 is full of dark fruits, fine grain leather, graphite, cedar and black pepper, dark chocolate all with a garnish of cinnamon. The silky tannin and bright acidity in this wine from a cooler vintage indicate great promise for long-term aging and versatility with many foods. El Llano is a Cabernet Sauvignon based blend from our vineyards in both the Coombsville and Oak Knoll AVAs.

Jay’s Take: “This fantastic blend is comprised of mostly cabernet and the rest syrah.  This wine has great fruit with big spice and is velvety on the palate while exuding a long fantastic finish.”

2010 Mi Sueno Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

MSCSNVglow2.103531$69.95/bottleReg. Wine Club Discounts Apply

Tasting Notes:
While the warm Coombsville days deliver big, bold, full-bodied Cabernet, the cool nights help to maintain their natural acidity. The results are a mouth-pleasing array of freshly roasted espresso bean, mocha, ripe black fruits and creamy white chocolate. Adding to your pleasure is a complex display of chewy, well-integrated tannins that are further enhanced by the toasted oak you would expect from premium French barrels.

Jay’s Take: “Only 600 cases were produced of this big, full-bodied cab.  Ripe fruit with just enough tannin and oak, this wine is showing well now, and would be a fantastic addition to anyone’s cellar.”

“Everything Corn” Prix-fixe Starts July 29

Speaking of prix-fixe dinners, our next event—Everything Corn—is set to be plated starting next Tuesday, July 29, and runs through August 3.  While our goal is to strive to devise unique themes every month, some events are so popular, we have no choice but to reprise them each year.  So it is with this fourth edition of Everything Corn.

You’d think it would be a challenge to be creative with something that is such a staple of the American diet (fructose comes to mind).  Not for Chef Alexander. . .he puts his personal twist on the menu that keeps it fresh and inspired every time.  You certainly won’t find corn on the cob anywhere, but consider these menu items and preparations (click here to peruse the full menu):

Popcorn puree, blue corn hominy, corn bread panzanella, puree of white corn soup, corn shoot and wild arugula salad (with raw corn and corn nuts), coconut creamed corn, corn-red curry emulsion, sweet corn bread pudding, Brentwood corn, white corn gelato and sweet corn panna cotta.

To see how these preparations are incorporated into the menu selections, click here for the full story.  Same deal as always, four courses with options for $59++ per person.  Vegetarian options are available (of course), but no substitutions or split plates.

Prime time is filling up on the weekends, so call for reservations ASAP to secure your preferred seating.  Call the restaurant at 530-823-0320 or go online to

It’s gonna be awesome, we guarantee!

Prix-fixe Theme Contest was a Photo Finish

VoteResults.084943With 347 votes cast in our throw-down to select a theme for the August prix-fixe event, the top three finalists very nearly shared the votes equally.  “Hot August Nights” (121) came out on top, however, just two votes in front of  “My Big Fat Greek Island Tour” (119).  “Along the Silk Road” (107) trailed by just 14 votes.

In the view of the judges, all of the finalists were winners, so here’s what we’re going to do.  Chef Alexander will create a prix-fixe menu for top finisher, “Hot August Nights,” submitted separately by Wendy Kan, Curt McMichael and Lindsay Hyatt Bar.  We will award each a dinner for two and a bottle of wine (that Drew selects) during August prix-fixe week.

While there were multiple suggestions for Greek dinners, Milt Champas articulated the theme most succinctly, so he will be awarded a $100 restaurant gift card (and we may implement the idea in the future).  Bruce Tepper’s “Along the Silk Road” inspiration earns him a $50 restaurant gift card.

Our thanks to everyone who participated in the contest.  It truly did produce interesting and creative concepts for potential menu articulation, and it appears that many folks were genuinely excited about being involved.  The contest truly engaged our “community” on two levels. . .noodling the ideas and then having the opportunity to vote for a winner.

Now, we hope everyone comes to try Hot August Nights on for size when we roll out the dinner next month, August 23 to 28.  Better make reservations now (CLICK HERE) or by calling 530-823-0320!

2012 Pezzi King Chardonnay (Russian River Valley)

PezziKing_chard-152x362.151728$22/bottle or $14.99/bottle on six +

Winery Tasting Notes:
“Vibrant flavors of passion fruit, honey and Key lime lead the way to melon, citrus and honeysuckle notes in the mouth. Chardonnay finishes with tropical fruit, garden herbs and hints of vanilla bean. Pairs wonderfully with salmon cakes topped with lemon aioli or chicken roasted with fresh garden herbs and creamy mushroom risotto on the side.”

Jay’s Take: “A classic chardonnay from the Russian River Valley.  Perfectly balanced with bright acidity, and richness, this chardonnay is an easy choice.”

$39.99/bottle or $29.99/bottle on six +

 Winery Tasting Notes:
“This wine has a distinctive and recognizable Russian River flavor profile. On the nose, the wine carries a bouquet of rose petal and spice that lead to flavors of bing cherry and raspberry on the palate. The finish is layered and balanced, with dusty earth overtones.”

Jay’s Take: “Love this pinot!  Bright fruit and a lingering finish have this as one of the top pinot noir’s in CV right now. “

Saxon Brown “Fighting Brothers” Zinfandel 2010 (Sonoma County)

SaxonBrown_zin10-152x362.152247$29.99/bottle or $24.99/bottle on six +

Winery Tasting Notes:
“Our 2010 Fighting Brothers Zinfandel has an intense raspberry and dried cranberry signature that seems to run from year to year, along with black cherry/berry, dark chocolate and sweet elegant oak tones. On the mouth this wine has great structure and firm acids with a core of dried raspberry, mocha and dark chocolate dust reminiscent of a decadent raspberry chocolate torte. This is a very rich and long wine.”

Jay’s Take: “This small production zinfandel is fantastic!  Only 298 cases of this beauty were produced, and we have a great unpublished discount on it that you won’t want to miss.”

2010 “Short Ends” (by Hollywood & Vine) Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

“This bright, fresh red wine shows sweet red cherries, dark cocoa and fragrant cigar smoke as the aromas swirl in the glass. The palate is medium-rich with boysenberry, cherry, mocha, sweet earth and blueberry notes. The finish is clean and fruit-focused.”

Jay’s Take: “This awesome wine is made by highly acclaimed winemaker Celia Welch.  A solid Napa Valley Cabernet for under 25 bucks.”

Your Vote Counts in Selecting Next Prix-fixe Theme

votebutton.165720After considerable deliberation among Carpe Vino’s management staff (Gary, Drew and Eric), we have winnowed more than 100 suggestions from the faithful to just three finalists for the August prix-fixe theme contest. Now it’s up to you to make the final decision by clicking here to select one of these ideas:

1.  Along the Silk Road
2.  Hot August Nights
3.  My Big Fat Greek Island Tour

You will be transported to Survey Monkey, where you may vote just one time (no attempts at ballot box stuffing, please).  By voting you will automatically be eligible to win a $50 restaurant-only gift card. Voting ends at midnight on July 21; the winner will be announced in the July 22 issue of Window on Old Town.

Just to recap what is at stake here, the winning entry receives dinner for four and two bottles of wine (that Drew selects) during next month’s prix-fixe week, August 19 to 24.  A couple of clarifications:  with two of the finalists, similar themes were presented, so with one, we selected the best-articulated idea; for the other, because two identical suggestions were submitted, we will split the prize if it is the winner.

We received some very interesting entries that didn’t make the cut:  The Donner Dinner Party would pay tribute to the famous group of pioneers that failed to make it over the summit. Menu suggestions were ribs, a head of cauliflower (to simulate a brain) and ladyfingers for dessert. Oh my. Seven Deadly Sins was pretty cool, too, but the menu consists of 10 dishes, so it didn’t make the finals.

The two cutest entries: Bridge Over Truffled Waters and Oh My Gourd. One entry obviously pandered to two of the judges:  A Taste of Chicago.

Our thanks to everyone who took the time to send in their ideas.  Now it is up to our legion of customers to pick the winner. . .so head to your polling place right now!

Carpe Vino Earns Third Wine Spectator Award

WSLogo.170438For the third year in a row, Carpe Vino has earned Wine Spectator’s Award of Excellence for its restaurant wine list. We were among 3,748 restaurants worldwide that were recognized by the magazine, widely revered as the bible of the wine industry.

To be considered for an award, entries must include a current menu and wine list. Since our wine list is presented electronically, we submitted a printout of the hundreds of wines in the store that comprise our list, plus our wines-by-the-class menu.

Carpe Vino was also recognized in 2012 and 2013. Other winners in our area include Ella’s, The Firehouse and The Grange in Sacramento; and Friar Tuck’s in Nevada City.

TBLabel_SauvBlanc_2013_750ml-front_larger.102534$32/bottle or $27.95/bottle on six +

Winery Tasting Notes:
This wine is very fresh and aromatic. The nose delivers expressions of gooseberry, cassis bud, a touch of lemon grass with hints of minerality, sweet anis, and a light, delicate smokiness to finish. The mouthfeel is a perfect balance of creaminess and acidity. In addition to the fruity notes on the palate, there is a light spiciness (nutmeg) and a hint of cookie dough. The very long finish leaves the mouth watering for more. 1100 cases produced.

Jay’s Take: “This is a great crisp and delicious sauvignon blanc.  Well balanced with fruit and acidity, this wine is perfect for any hot day, bbq, or fish dish.”

2012 Tamber Bey “Deux Chevaux Vineyard” Chardonnay (Napa Valley)

TBLabel_DCChard_2012_750ml-front_smaller.103029$55/bottle or $35/bottle on six +

Winery Tasting Notes:
This wine is all about what makes our Deux Chevaux Vineyard Chardonnay so special. The complex nose mixes butterscotch, vanilla, sweet oak, dry fruits (apricots, mangos, bananas) up front that evolves into more subtle fennel flower, white truffle and Asagio cheese notes. The mouthfeel is rich, lush and creamy, mixing delicate apricot, brioche, white chocolate and dulce de leche flavors. 780 cases produced.

Jay’s Take: “This chardonnay is beautiful!  Perfect balance of oak and lucious fruit with a smooth creamy finish.  This wine will have you begging for more.”

2011 Tamber Bey “Deux Chevaux Vineyard” Cabernet Sauvignon (Napa Valley)

TBLabel2011_Cab_front.103805$45/bottle or $35/bottle on six +

The 2011 Deux Chevaux Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon continues to present itself as a classic Napa valley floor Cabernet Sauvignon from the Yountville Appellation. The nose greets you with aromas of cola, plum, crushed stone, sweet vanilla and a light touch of leather. The mouth feel is soft and round, with a perception of sweetness. Dusty tannins will evolve with age. Flavors of cola mixed with dark stone fruits and kirsch. The finish delivers sweet oak notes, cigar box and chocolate powder. 1072 cases produced.

Jay’s Take: “Always a solid performer in the cabernet department.  This big bold cabernet will awesomely pair well with grilled meats and bold flavors, but can also be appreciated on it’s own.”

2011 Tamber Bey “Deux Chevaux Vineyard” Rabicano (Napa Valley)

TBLabel2011_Rabicano_front.104206$55/bottle or $35/bottle on six +

Winery Tasting Notes:
60% cabernet sauvignon, 26% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc, 5% Petit Verdot
The 2011 Bordeaux blend “Rabicano” represents the fifth vintage of this Yountville Appellation wine from the Deux Chevaux Vineyard.  The nose is greeted with aromas of red currant, red cherry, a hint of pomegranate, clay and floral in the form of delicate lavender notes. The aroma evolves into light cedar, gentian violet and blackberry.  The mouth feel is medium bodied, velvety, seamless and fresh, thanks to good acidity lifting up the wine. Flavors of pomegranate are mixed with an herbal hint. The finish mixes delicate crushed raspberry notes with light cigar box, smokiness and ash. This is a wonderful “drink now” wine that will also improve with age. 1520 cases produced.

Jay’s Take: “This beauty is ready to be enjoyed now.  Such wonderul inviting aromas and flavors, this too will have you begging for mercy!”
