Last Call for NYE Prix-Fixe at Carpe Vino

We’ll be saying “good-bye” to 2015 with a packed house for our New Year’s Eve prix-fixe dinner, but we still have limited availability to serve just a few more foodies.  Again this year, our four-course menu—with options—is a delightful way to segue into what we hope will be another great year on the food and wine front.

Click here for the full menu with preparations.  Cost is $105++ per person.  For this event, we’re only taking reservations at the restaurant (OpenTable is blacked out).  Call 530-823-0320, and we’ll welcome you to the friendly confines on New Year’s Eve!

Wherever you celebrate this holiday, we wish you and your family the best in 2016.

Opening Hours:  BTW, we’ll be open for business on New Year’s Day, as well as Saturday, January 2.  However, we will be closed on Sunday, January 3, 2016.

Closing Out 2015, a Year of Growth & Challenges

After nearly 14 years in business, what could possibly be new at Carpe Vino?  As it turns out, plenty. . .

For most mature businesses, growth is typically incremental, and in some respects, that was our experience at Carpe Vino in 2015.  Sales levels increased nicely on all fronts, though the percentages were more modest this year (because of the higher total number we’ve achieved!).

What has always driven our business, however, has been change: creating new programs and adding new space.  Here are highlights from this year:

165Courthouse.102521

Purchased 165 Court Street:  We’ve been renting this two-story Victorian behind Carpe Vino for several years, and because it has become so fundamental to our business, we felt it was essential to protect our interests by attempting to purchase it.  Our landlord was willing, so we put a deal together and closed in October.

In the months ahead, you’ll be hearing more about our plans for this structure that already houses our offices, Century Wine Club and serves as a warehouse.  It has been beautifully renovated, but we’re building out a sizeable portion of the first floor for an events center exclusively for Wine Club members.  Watch this space for details!

Ramped Up Giving:  Carpe Vino has always been supportive of philanthropic initiatives in our community. . .from the Big Day of Giving to supporting fund raisers with everything from gift cards to dinner packages, we invested more than $20,000 in programs this year.  On top of this, we made a $5,000 contribution earmarked for food-based and homeless programs in the name of our Wine Club to the Placer Community Foundation.

Installed New Façade Signage:  In the wake of rebranding Carpe Vino with a new corporate logo, we finished the project with all-new signage for the front of the Lincoln Way building.  This included replacing a fabric awning with a corrugated metal material that is similar to what was used at the turn of the 20th century.

Launched a GEM of a Shuttle Service:  In March, we purchased a GEM “Neighborhood Electric Vehicle” that seats four and has a diamond-plated truck bed (as well as a neon light package).  We put the GEM into service immediately as a shuttle on Friday and Saturday evenings (Rob is your driver).  During the daytime, Spencer uses it to haul wine between the store and the warehouse.

Made a “Pilgrimage to Provence”:  In October, we sponsored a 10-day wine, food and art tour of Provence in partnership with Earthbound Expeditions of Seattle.  Twenty-four Wine Club members joined us on the trip.  Stay tuned for an announcement about where we are headed in 2016!

More Shiner in the Pipeline:  This year we had three releases of our proprietary brand, Shiner, including 150 cases of a Paso Robles cabernet sauvignon.

Amped Up the Bar Menu:  We listened to our customers and dramatically expanded our casual bar menu with simple fare to enjoy with a glass of wine.  We also added weekly bar specials. . .ranging from shrimp & grits to tomato soup & grilled cheese sandwich.

Chocoholics Rejoice:  We introduced a line of chocolates from Raffiné Chocolatiers of Newcastle. . .in gift packages and bites for the wine bar.

The Ying & Yang of Personal Stuff:  On the bright side, celebrated the marriage of our founding chefs, Eric Alexander and Courtney McDonald.  But then in June we bid “adieu” to our beloved, long-time staffer, Beth White, who moved with her family to Boise, Idaho.  We also weathered a serious health issue that is now in check.

Looking back, we have much to be thankful for.  And we’re genuinely excited about what’s ahead in 2016.  We wish you all the best!

All the best in 2016,

gary, Drew & the Carpe Vino Staff

Make Your Reservations Now for New Year’s Eve

If you’d like to join us on New Year’s Eve for dinner, better decide now.  Just like Valentine’s Day, those who wait to make reservations risk not getting a table. . .and you don’t want to be microwaving Swanson dinners on December 31!  Call the restaurant at 530-823-0320 to score your preferred time.

And the times, they are a changin’.  Back in the day like most joints, we would ring in the New Year with party favors, noisemakers and a gala midnight toast.  No mas.  These days its a more mellow program tuned to your chakra. . . we throttle back and provide our savvy clientele with a quiet sanctuary to acknowledge the dawn of the New Year.

Chef Alexander has created a fabulous, five-course dinner that can be your tasty, early prelude to the New Year, enabling you to return home safely, well before amateur hour begins.  Click here for the full menu preparations, an exercise in simplicity and elegance. . .Chef has made all the decisions, easing the agony of parsing choices.  We suspect everyone will be pleased (even vegetarians, who will be appeased).  Here’s the line up:

Course One:  Japanese Hamachi Tartare.  Course Two:  Puree of Parsnip Soup.  Course Three:  Seared Dayboat Scallop.  Course Four:  48-Hour Wagyu Beef Sabuton.  Course Five:  Valrohna Chocolate Torte.

Cost for the dinner is $105 per person, plus tax and tip.  To make reservations, you must call the restaurant at 530-823-0320; OpenTable.com is not available for this event.

How ever you spend the evening, have a great time and be prudent.  If you will be out and about, you have these choices:  appoint a designated driver; call a taxi or Uber; consume responsibly.  We want to see everyone make it home safely to enjoy the New Year!

Members Donate $5k to Placer Community Foundation

Earlier this year, Drew and I decided we had to make a change. . .we needed to find another way to express our gratitude to our 1,200+ Carpe Vino Wine Club members for their loyal patronage and our solidarity in the appreciation of fine wine and great food.  Hosting our annual blowout party for 400 people in the middle of our busiest two weeks of the year just wasn’t sustainable logistically and because of the physical toll it took on our crew.

So, last week–as promised–we made a donation to the Placer Community Foundation for $5,000 in your name, the members of the Wine Club.  We’re actually neighbors with the PCF in Old Town, and CEO Veronica Blake and a gaggle of her board members walked over for the check presentation on the porch of our Victorian on Court Street.

The PCF prepared a very kind statement for our news release:  “We greatly appreciate the Moffats and the Carpe Vino Wine Club for their donation for food-based initiatives and programs directed at the homeless,” said Foundation Chair Pam Constantino. “We are grateful and proud to partner with Carpe Vino to help make a difference in the community.”

I have to tell you, it was a very proud moment for Drew and me to be able to truly give back to the community.  We’ve been doing it quietly since the day we opened our business, but we know that in the hands of the PCF, this gift will be converted to action to help the less fortunate who live among us.

December 25:  Closed.

December 31:  Special prix-fixe menu only

January 1:  We’re open for business.

January 3:  Closed.  We’re normally open on Sunday, but we’re giving the staff and our building a rest.

Ho-Ho-Ho Pricing on Mettler Cab to Wrap Deal Week

Santa Gary’s gotta be honest. . .the pressure of putting all of these wine deals together this week has knocked him right on his ample butt.  So, the Big Man is rubbing his lucky reindeer hoof because this is finally the last deal of the season. . .and it’s a winner:  He’s got 28 cases of the 2013 Mettler Estate Cabernet Sauvignon at the lowest price in the galaxy. . .just $17.99 per bottle when you purchase six or more.

Right about now, Santa Gary is feeling kinda shallow. . .with all of his hyping of low prices this week, you’d think Carpe Vino has morphed into the Grocery Outlet of wine.  Actually, it’s all about taking the high road of low prices during our Seven Days of Wine Deals. . .it’s about delivering the juice at best pricing to make sure that when you depress the “Buy Now” button, you are immediately overcome by a soothing afterglow.

Mettler.153942The Mettler Cab–when we can get it–is one of our most popular Lodi-sourced wines.  It’s all about monster fruit, lean tannins and the promise of a solid finish. . .backed up by solid value.

Winery priced at $24.99 per bottle, the best price we’ve ever offered in $19.99.  As long as our year-end supply lasts, it’s yours for $17.99 when you purchase at least six.  That’s just shy of a 30% savings over the winery. . .and as good as it gets in the Golden State.

For your convenience, park in the loading zone in front of the shop and Santa Gary will fill your trunk!

Winery Tasting Notes:  “Our 2013 cabernet sauvignon shows off a dark, purple-red color in the glass. It opens with inviting aromas of dark berries, cedar, oak and spice, followed by a graceful mingling of cherry, blackberry, currant and sweet oak flavors. On the palate, the plush mouthfeel is moderated by juicy acidity, taking the perfect alignment of fruit, oak and tannins through to a flawless finish. This elegant and poised cabernet is accessible now, and its structure and complexity will see it through many years of aging.”

Blend:  88% cabernet sauvignon; 12% petite sirah
Alcohol:  15.6%
Cases Produced:  8,377
Winemaker:  Adam Mettler
$24.99

Here’s your last chance this holiday season to tango with Santa Gary.  Do a pirouette on the “Buy Now” button to reserve your stash of Mettler cab.  Merry Christmas!!

We Go Renegade with 33% Off Smokin’ Red Blend

There’s nuthin’ Santa Gary loves more than going “Rogue.” Since the days when he was a youngster cleaning reindeer stalls, Big Jolly has made it his life’s work to break the rules. . .and he’s doing it big time with this deal (I just love writing in the third person. . .there’s something regal about it):

Santa Gary has just acquired 11 cases of the 90-point (Wine Enthusiast) 2012 Ancient Peaks “Renegade” Red Blend (Margarita Vineyard, Paso Robles) priced at a whopping 33% off winery retail of $24 per bottle.  Promise Santa Gary you’ll purchase at least six bottles, and take all you can carry for $15.99 each.  Even K&L doesn’t have a snowball’s chance in Tahiti of beating this deal (this box store charges $18.99 per pop).

Do Santa Gary a solid and don’t gloat to your peeps about the stewpid deal you scored.  This is a year-end, one-time purchase that has as much a chance of being repeated as Donald Trump has to be elected president of these United States (okay, how many customers did that just cost me?).

Renegade.152612Red blends are on top of Santa Gary’s list of go-to wines, and Ancient Peaks does an amazing job of working the magic in the barrel room.  The ’12 Renegade is a ready-to-drink stunner, and it should be your house wine for the holidays.

Wine Enthusiast Review (90 points):  “Cooked cherries in vanilla butter, just-pressed espresso, chopped dill and a hint of tar decorate the nose of this blend from a unique vineyard atop the Cuesta Grade. Black licorice, dark blackberries, rustic elderberries and a cedar-y, asphalt-laden grip power the palate.”

Winery Tasting Notes:  “Offers lavish black fruit aromas with notes of wet stone and savory smokiness. A juicy, mouth-filling texture delivers robust flavors of plum, cassis and boysenberry with hints of cocoa and white pepper. Power yields to elegance on the finish, concluding with fine tannins and focused structure.”

Blend:  71% syrah; 24% Malbec; 5% petit verdot
Alcohol:  14.3%
Cases produced:  4,430
Winemakers:  Mike Sinor and Stewart Cameron
Winery Price:  $24

Santa Gary is a bit weary after pulling all of these deals together.  So give the Old Man a break, and do the right thing. . .buy some wine.  Just give the “Buy Now” button a tap and you’re on you way to six bottles of Joy to the World.

You’ve Been Pimped by Santa: 20% Off Gift Cards

Now you don’t have to hate yourself for missing out on Monday’s deal of 20% off Carpe Vino gift cards.  We’re reprising the same outlandish offer today. . .but the insanity stops today!

Here are the details from Monday:

Santa Gary is back with the first of Carpe Vino’s Seven Holiday Wine Deals for the 2015 Christmas season.  This year ‘Ole Jolly isn’t messing around: he’s coming out of the box strong with what has become an annual tradition:  for the next 24 hours (until 7:59AM on December 19), you can purchase Carpe Vino gift cards at a 20% discount.  You read that correctly, Sport, 20% off!

There are tons of options, and, of course, some limitations.  Purchase a $50 gift card and we’ll knick your credit card for just $40.  Opt for a $100 card and pay $80.  Our clients are uniformly intelligent, so Santa Gary knows you have grasped the concept of SAVING BIG TIME at CHRISTMAS TIME!

A couple caveats regarding this deal:  First, a maximum of four cards totaling $200 per person please ($160 gets you $200 worth of gift cards.).   You can use the cards for any purchase in Carpe Vino, but you may only use one $50-card per table, per visit in the restaurant.  No limitations when it comes to wine purchases (except 7 Holiday Wine Deals).

Chocolate_giftCard.214044***HAVING TROUBLE ONLINE – Contact Jana Kosmata @ 530.823.0320 (x103) or jana@carpevinoauburn.com

An important exclusion with this deal:  It cannot be combined with any other offers in the Seven Holiday Wine Deals presented this week.  All of the wines offered will be significantly discounted, and we cannot offer what amounts to another 20% reduction in price.  Come on guys, give Santa Gary a break here!

Supersize Your Gift with Raffine Chocolate:  If you intend to offer gift cards as presents, no doubt your recipients will be immensely grateful. . .though perhaps a bit underwhelmed by receiving a hunk of plastic in a cardboard sleeve.  Here’s a high-impact suggestion:  present your gift card in an elegant holder fitted with a chocolate sample from Raffine Chocolatiers of Newcastle.  They’ve custom designed a smooth and creamy bar with the Carpe Vino logo that is absolutely sinful (our attorney requested that you please remind your recipient that the gift card is not edible!).  Supersize your gift card for just $5, a miniscule price to show some lip-smackin’ love!

So, Santa Gary says jump on this deal by jumping on the “Buy Now” button now.  You will be teleported instantly to our e-store, where our patient, workshop elves are sipping on pinot, ready to place your order!
