Putting 2016 Firmly in the Rearview Mirror

byebye.093114For as long as Drew and I have owned Carpe Vino–15 years in February–I have always taken particular joy in writing a simple year-end report about how we have fared.  Typically, these emails have been buoyant and optimistic, recounting our successes and sometimes, candid failures.  We’ve had our share of both.

But now that 2016 is finally in our rearview mirror, I’m just glad it is over.  I turned 66 a month ago, and this year has been one of the most tumultuous and worrisome that I have lived through.  This is not a place for political commentary, but, frankly, I am weary of it all. . .as well as personally troubled about the future of our country.

Thankfully, people still gotta eat and drink, so we’re here for you.

From a business perspective, 2016 was unpredictable and occasionally worrisome as nationwide consternation was reflected in restaurant attendance.  On the nights of major political dates, we could have just stayed home.  After November 9, however, folks came out in droves and we had a great Christmas season in the restaurant and wine sales.  Our thanks to you all for continuing to patronize the Friendly Confines.

The absolute summit of over-the-top…

delirious joy for the Moffat boys was watching the Chicago Cubs end a 108-year drought by finally winning the World Series in a seven-game nail-biter with the Cleveland Indians.  A lifetime of disappointment and cruel heartbreak was rinsed away in an instant, and we are reborn.  We capped the series by bring a 16-foot Jumbotron to the plaza of Old Town for game seven.  No kidding, it was of the thrills of my time on this planet, and now I will be whole when meet my maker.  I just hope they have Chicago hot dogs in heaven (or wherever) because we sold 600 during the World Series.  The residual is Carpe Vino is now on the vendor locator map for Vienna brand all-beef hot dogs!
tuscany.103243We achieved a notable milestone in April when we celebrated a Decade of Dining, with Chef Eric Alexander at the helm the whole way.  During that time, the restaurant was awarded 4 stars two times by the SacBee and was named to OpenTable’s list of the Top 100 Restaurants in America four times.

A personal highlight for me was conducting my third international wine tour, this one a 10-day sipping foray through Tuscany with a group of 28 wine enthusiasts.  In partnership with Earthbound Expeditions, we put together an amazing itinerary of some of the best wineries in Tuscany, plus we enjoyed the stunning bounty of the region and stayed at very comfortable hotels.  We even hooked up with Drew for a short time in Florence while he was in Italy on vacation.

Chef’s Conlon, Alexander, McDonald & Chef-to-be…Josie!

Our program of dialing back our prix-fixe program to six times each year for two weeks each worked out really well for us and our customers. . .who now have a better chance of being able to work the dinners into busy schedules.  We were also fortunate to host a cookbook signing and a sold-out, prix-fixe dinner to celebrate the publication of “The Adventures of Fat Rice,” authored by Abraham Conlon and Adrienne Lo.  Abraham was a classmate of Chef Alexander and Chef McDonald at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY.  Abe worked at Carpe Vino for about six months before he moved to Chicago and ultimately opened Fat Rice, a highly-regard restaurant in partnership with Adrienne.

If there was a disappointment this year, it is we were unable to launch our planned “Club Cru,” a private entertainment space we envisioned in our Court Street building.  We simply didn’t get the response from customers when we floated the idea.

The upside is we went ahead and installed our beautiful, antique, floor-to-ceiling mirror and we purchased a Fusiontable for the space (combination pool/dining table).  Stay tuned:  we’ve got more work to do, but we may make it available for small, private parties.  I moved my office from home into one end of the space, and I’m delighted to be back in the building most days.

Looking Ahead to 2017. . .

2017.105010We’re starting off the New Year with mixed emotions because we’re saying “good-bye” to two, long-time staff members.  Wine Club Manager Jana Kosmata called it a day after working for Carpe Vino for more than seven years.  And at the end of January, our beloved restaurant manager, Ada Campos, will be moving to Arizona after nine years at the helm.  We will miss them both and do our best to Stay Calm and Carry On.

IMG_5742.105619Another notable change is that we will no longer be open on Sundays.  When you balance revenues against operating costs, it is the obvious decision for us.  The silver lining is that Sundays will now be available for scheduling special events and for hosting small, private dinners at the Carpe Vino wine bar.  We’ve done these in years past and they have been very successful.

And speaking of special events, we have our first program set for Sunday, January 29.  We’re very fortunate to be celebrating the publication of the new novel of a 16-time New York Times best-selling author.  This is a major coup for us that will feature a combination prix-fixe dinner and book signing.  Word up:  this event will sell out instantly, and we’ll be announcing details next week.

Our expectation is that Carpe Vino will continue to thrive as we move into 2017–as long as we keep changing up the mix here.  If we stay relevant with new ideas and approaches, we think we can con you folks into coming back!

All the best for the New Year,

gary, Drew & the Carpe Vino Staff

New_Year_wallpapers_Happy_New_Year__champag.101548

Nothing but sparkling wines this week for Saturday Wine Club Member tasting! That’s right, you read that correctly, all BUBBLES! From Champagne to Crémant to Cava to Prosecco, CV has it all! So, come on down between 1 P.M. & 4 P.M. to taste/stock up on some excellent NYE vino. Whether you’re hosting a party or planning on being the life of the party, then here is the perfect opportunity to pick out that ultimate sparkler: (please remember two-person maximum per wine club membership, no guests.)

DC.103319Domaine Collin – Cremant de Limoux Brut Rose NV

$16.95/bottle or $14.95/bottle on 6+

Winery Tasting Notes: “This elegantly constructed rosé is pale salmon pink in color. Though the wine is primarily made from Chardonnay, subtle wild strawberry notes are detectable in the nose and on the palate from the Pinot Noir. The crisp, mineral Chardonnay is softened by the lush and aromatic Chenin Blanc. The result is a lively wine with a lot of character, without any aggressive or astringent notes. This is a wonderfully versatile rosé ideal or pork and salmon dishes, or simply on its own as an aperitif.”

JBrutRose.103705J Brut Rose Sparkling NV (California

$39.95/bottle or $29.95/bottle on 6+

Winery Tasting Notes: “Our J Brut Rosé sparkles with a vibrant pink salmon hue and offers layered aromas of fresh strawberries, raspberries, Fuji apple, rose petals and a savory swath of toasted hazelnuts. On the palate, an elegant mouthfeel combines with flavors of ripe raspberry, blood orange and blanched almonds underlined by lively acidity and steely minerality. I recommend pairing it with roasted beet and goat cheese salad, or a simple plate of smoked salmon canape and Cypress Grove Humboldt Fog cheese.”

BrocardPierre_chard-152x362.105331Brocard Pierre Blanc de Noirs Brut Champagne NV (France)

$49.95/bottle - 50% OFF on any purchase!

Winery Tasting Notes: “Clear gold color, yeasty nose of lavender, toasted hazelnuts, figs. Mouthfeel is rich, crisp and clean, with flavors of red plum, red raspberries, white cherries. This is a savory and delicious wine. 100% Pinot Noir from the 2006 vintage. Only 80 Cases Imported”

TaittingerChampBrutReims.104224

Taittinger “Brut la Francaise” Champagne NV (France)

$49.95/bottle or $39.95/bottle on 6+

Winery Tasting Notes: “This Champagne is a blend of some 30 Chardonnay and Pinot Noir vineyards, respectively 40% and 60% of the total, from several harvests of perfectly ripened grapes.”

“Wine Spectator” Tasting Notes: 90 Points

“Subtle overall, offering a creamy mousse and a pleasing juiciness to the notes of apricot tart, slivered almond, orchard blossom and apple.”

Santa Scott Pruett….bringing his sleigh of wine to CV!

pruettsign.074033 Yesterday, Santa Pruett drove his four-wheeled sleigh to Carpe Vino’s warehouse and dropped off 32 cases for today’s “NEW RELEASE” Tasting at Carpe Vino.  Only problem was Santa Pruett forgot one very important case of wine back at Santa’s winery.  Instead of rushing back & forth yesterday, Santa Pruett decided he would pop on down for the tasting today and enjoy some time with the Carpe Vino Wine Club Members.  So…just like Santa…we don’t have an exact time but he will be here, pen in hand to sign bottles if you so choose!  If this is all news to you…keep reading below.  Regardless, we hope to see you at CV today from 1-4pm!

Todays Deal ~ 2013 Six Sigma Diamond Mine Cuvée

winery priced at $21/bottle, NOW JUST $14.99 on 6+ bottles or more. . .a savings of nearly 29%.

Cuvee-no-background-IMG_1261_229-229-219_600-1

Screen Shot 2016-12-15 at 11.24.13 AM

As many of you may have discerned independently by now, I have decamped to the beach.  The last time I lovingly crafted an email to extoll my latest, greatest wine find was Christmas 2015.  Drew and Jay have done quite brilliantly without me since then, thank you.

But I was contacted recently by Christian Ahlmann, vice president of Six Sigma Ranch and Winery, who reminded me of the 2013 Diamond Mine Cuvée.  It is the estate’s red blend and one of Lake County’s perennial charmers.  We worked out such a fabulous deal on 26 cases that Trump’s transition team is shortlisting me for Secretary of Good Times.

Pressed back into service, I changed the oil of my marketing motor and sprayed a shot of ether into the carburetor.  Sucker cranked on the second pull, so here are the particulars:

My first encounter with Six Sigma was back in 2010 when I parked my Airstream at the Gregory Graham Winery and spent several days in Lake County.  I conducted a leisurely tour around the perimeter of Clear Lake, and one of my most notable visits was to the Six Sigma ranch.

As a fugitive from high tech, I’m probably among the few people in the wine industry who are aware that “Six Sigma” is an engineering process aimed at achieving no defects 99.99966% of the time for every million opportunities.  It is the ultimate demonstration of quality:  zero defects, or, quite literally, perfection.

And that’s the philosophy and discipline mathematician Kaj Ahlmann brought to viticulture, winemaking and marketing when he and his engineer wife, Else, purchased 4,300 acres to launch their winery.  Sixteen years later, the estate is maturing nicely.  It is managed by his progeny, and the operation has expanded to include raising beef.  And, fortunately, it escaped damage during the massive wildfires in the region earlier this year.

Christian sent me a couple of bottles of the 2013 Diamond Mine Cuvée, and I knew it would be an instant hit at Carpe Vino. . .and Drew agreed.  A boisterous blend of tempranillo, cab and syrah, this wine is dark, dense and ominous in the glass, yet it is amazingly approachable to sip.  Of equal importance, it is a delightfully agreeable pairing with a wide range of food, especially tender cuts of beef.

Last night, I was invited to a neighbor’s house for posole, and it delighted the assemblage of friends.  And that’s the best argument for bringing home six bottles of this wine for your holiday entertaining:  your guests will love it, even if they think they know something about wine.  At six-bottle pricing of $14.99, this cuvée performs like a much pricier wine.  Great fruit, cuts spices yet does not overpower. . .what more could you want?

Winery Tasting Notes: “A blockbuster of a Cuvée, this vintage ventures into elite Tempranillo territory with its Spanish majority blend. It is like an abandoned set from an action movie. A scent of smoke and loads of kinetic energy hidden in its darkness which has no boundaries. Go on in, cigars are lit and Italian espresso is served with a dark chocolate tart… who’s the double agent?”

Blend:  63 % Tempranillo, 26% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Syrah
Alcohol:  14.1%
Cases Produced:  1,375
Winemaker:  Sandy Robertson

So my friends, take the word of withered, aging wine merchant and jump on the “Buy Now” button.  It’s about time somebody takes me seriously again!
