For the GIN, we chose Hayman’s London Dry Gin for two reasons; THE PRICE ($32) and THE PEDIGREE.  The Hayman family is the oldest gin-distilling family in London, dating to 1863. Company founder James Burrough, the great grandfather of the current chairman, Christopher Hayman, created the world-renowned Beefeater Gin. All of Hayman’s gins are true English gins–produced just as they would have been over 150 years ago.

For the cherry liqueur we stuck with the classic…LUXARDO MARCHIANO CHERRY LIQUEUR.

Murray Stenson of Seattle’s Zig Zag unearthed the equal-parts classic—gin, maraschino liqueur, Chartreuse and lime juice—in Ted Saucier’s 1962 book, “Bottoms Up.” Before long, the Last Word was a staple in cocktail bars across the country, revered for its heady balance of sweet, sour and herbal flavors. Whether you hew to the original recipe or stake out your own variation (mezcal is worthy substitute for gin), one thing is certain: The Last Word will leave you, um, speechless.”

HOW TO MAKE “THE LAST WORD”

  • 3/4 ounce Hayman’s Gin
  • 3/4 ounce Green Chartreuse
  • 3/4 ounce Luxardo Maraschino liqueur
  • 3/4 ounce fresh lime juice
  • Add all ingredients into a shaker with ice and shake.
  • Double-strain into a chilled coupe glass.

“THE LAST RUN”

Essentially, the same as “The Last Word,” but this version uses Dolin Génépy instead of the Green Chartreuse.

DOLIN GENEPY – Génépy (sometimes spelled Génépi) is a legendary alpine herbal liqueur that dates back many hundreds of years. While comprised of a multitude of alpine herbs, the most prominent is Génépy, a petite variety of artemisia (often translated into English as “mountain sage”) found principally in the high mountains of the Savoy. Its bright herbal and fresh flavors have long been associated with the mountain air and adventure. Today it is still the darling of French ski resorts and fine dining, served on the rocks or with tonic water, and very welcome after a fondue. Using its own alembic still, Dolin has made this Génépy from local farmers’ herbs since 1821.

Luxardo Maraschino Cherries

Maraschino cherries go back to their Italian roots. Produced in Torreglia, Italy, these cherries are nothing like the bright red orbs you find in cocktails from workaday bars. Dense and chewy with a sweet-tart flavor, these maraschino cherries are made with prized sour marasca cherries preserved in the fruit’s famed liqueur. They’ll take your Manhattan (or Shirley Temple) to new heights and are also delicious spooned with their rich syrup over ice cream or cheesecake.
