Head High Wines, a second label of Three Sticks Winery, are made by longtime industry vet Sam Spencer and Bill Price of Price Family Vineyards. Head High is a true surf-inspired wine brand. Both Sam and Bill share a love for the outdoors, specifically surfing, which is where Head High derives its name. It is a term that refers to the waves being the same height as the riders. It’s through this unique connection of surf and wine that Head High crafts their red blend with the most sustainable farming practices. They believe that through wine they can not only bring joy to people’s lives but also promote environmental awareness.
Now I know what you’re thinking…is the wine any good? ANSWER = AKAW!!! (Something surfers shout when they spot a perfect wave). The 2013 Head High Red Blend is a perfect wave of JUICY, DARK, and SEDUCTIVE flavors. With its DARK PURPLE hue, you are drawn in by the aromas of RIPE BERRIES and PLUMS that are complimented by hints of COCOA. CHOCOLATE COVERED CHERRIES and DENSE BLACKBERRY flavors dominate the palate as you are rewarded with the perfect amount of tannin and acidity. Take it from me, this wine is DELICOUS on its own…NO QUESTION!!! But, pair it with a grilled ribeye and you’re in for a REAL TREAT!!
Tasting Notes: 36% Malbec, 20% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 13% Zinfandel, 11% Grenache 93 Points “2013 Head High Red Wine: deep purple color. On the nose an array of ripe red and black fruits – blueberry, blackberry, candied raspberry, with a dusting of cocoa powder. The palate is very plush, with soft, chewy tannins and medium acidity. There are layers of baked berries, chocolate, and warm spices, all wrapped in a lusciously round mouthfeel. This wine combines the ripe black fruit of Malbec and Cabernet with the red fruit and verve of Zinfandel and Grenache – the best of many worlds in one glass.” -Peter Neptune, MS
