Wine Spectator” Notes: 90 Points

“There’s purity to the cherry, floral and mineral aromas and flavors in this lean, firm red, with accents of leather and earth. The structure and grainy tannins lend support. Fine length. Best from 2017 through 2024. 3,900 cases made.” – BS

What Is Chianti Classico?

Chianti Classico became a distinguished appellation in Tuscany when a public decree was signed by Grand Duke of Tuscany Cosmo III de’ Medici in 1716.  This decree established the first geographic area that would become to represent the definition of quality wine.  Essentially, it created the pathway to the Italian Wine Laws we know today, the DOCG.  Which, Chianti Classico achieved such distinction in 1984.  The wine must contain a minimum of 80% sangiovese and may include 20% of other varietals such as canaiolo, cabernet sauvignon and merlot.  Also, to be classified “Classico” the wine must be aged no less than one year!
