Gundlach Bundschu, aka “GUN BUN.”  It’s a name we have all heard hundreds of times when talking about California wine and safe to say, many of you have tried and liked the wine.  Those whom have been to the Sonoma winery, rave about their experience and generally end up buying one of their cute t-shirts playing on the name of the winery (think Pictionary).  Fact is, until now, we (CV) never really explored the nitty gritty of how historic and important GUN BUN was to the OVERALL California wine movement.

While researching information on the today’s special, the 2016 Gundlach Bundschu “Mountain Cuvee” Red Wine, we clicked on this link (https://www.gunbun.com/history/) and just started to scroll through the almost 175 year old family history.  Below are a few bullet points, but if you have time and the interest, we highly recommend that you click the link (above) and scroll through for yourself.

1858 – Jacob Gundlach purchases 400 acres in Sonoma
1859 – 15000 vines planted
1906 – San Francisco winery destroyed, 1Million gallons of wine lost
1919 – Winery closes doors due to Prohibition
1933 – Carl Bundschu hired to run Inglenook Winery in Napa
1950 – Towel Bundschu contracts grapes to Louis Martini (interesting side note; he was not paid for fruit until wine was sold.  Could be upwards of two-three years).
1976 – Gun Bun Winery Re-Opens to Public.  Also, one of first wineries to plant Merlot in California

There is a bunch more history for you to view, but this gives you a true indication of what we are trying to convey…GUN BUN is the real deal!

Now into their sixth generation of winemakers, they are stronger than ever, with their wines continuing to receive excellent scores from the critics.  One of the BEST VALUES we found last year, was the 2016 Gundlach Bundschu “Mountain Cuvee” Red Wine which retails for $20/bottle but discounts to $15/bottle on a 6+ bottle purchase.  Receiving 90 Points from the Wine Enthusiast, this Merlot dominant wine is true to the core of GUN

BUN and delivers an exceptional value for the price.  With only SIX cases left…you know what to do!

73% Merlot, 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Malbec, 2% Cabernet Franc

TASTING NOTES: “Whether novice or aficionado, the quaffable, affordable, yet seriously crafted and complex Mountain Cuvee always provides drinking pleasure to a wide audience and name-an-experience. Welcoming aromas of cherries, raspberries, warm vanilla, and a little cola lead to a medium bodied wine framed by soft tannins and lively acidity. The silky texture showcases layers of lush cassis and red fruit with savory cocoa powder revealed on the finish. Created for life’s sooner-rather-than-later enjoyments.”

Cheers,
The CV Crew
