Michter’s is an iconic American Whiskey Distillery that dates back all the way to 1753! That’s not to say it hasn’t had its struggles along the way which included filing for bankruptcy in 1989. A couple of years later Michter’s would be rescued/relaunched, though it would take almost 20 years for a true resurgence within the marketplace. Today, Michter’s is back to being ON TOP with their core products under the US*1 line-up of Rye, Bourbon, American Whiskey and Sour Mash, leading the charge. The Rye and Bourbon are phenomenal values that you can generally find year-round, but the American Whiskey and Sour Mash are the two that have become nearly impossible to get! In fact, the Bourbon and American Whiskey are still out-of-stock!
***Interesting fact…Michter’s US*1 Sour Mash was the distilleries top-selling product throughout the 1970s-80s.
WHAT MAKES IT A SOUR MASH?
Sour mash – is a process used in the distilling industry that uses material from an older batch of mash to start the fermentation of a new batch, analogous to the making of sourdough bread with a starter. The term can also be used as the name of the type of mash used in that process, and a Bourbon made using this process can be referred to as a sour mash Bourbon. “Sour mash” does not refer to the flavor of the Bourbon.
Sour beer may also be created with this process. – “WIKIPEDIA”
WHY SHOULD YOU BUY IT?
1.) WINE ENTHUSIAST, 93 POINTS: Resurrected after 23 years, this smooth, buttery American whiskey is worth the wait. It has mellow vanilla and oak flavors, with a faint cherry essence on the long finish that seems to urge, ‘stir up a few Manhattans already.’ – (7/13)
2.) Named “Whisky Of The Year” for 2019 by The Whisky Exchange (World’s Largest Whiskey Retailer)
3.) Outstanding not only for Manhattans (as mentioned above) but makes one of the best OLD FASHIONED’S we have ever had!
4.) Extremely hard-to-come by these days. Whether you keep it for yourself or give it as a gift, you got something special!
DISTILLERY NOTES:
PROOF: 86
BLEND: Proprietary grain mash (Rye, Corn, Barleymalt)
COOPERAGE: Fire-charred, new American white oak barrels
TASTING NOTES: Warm toasted burnt sugar notes with spice, sweet, smokey fruit, candied cherries, and honey vanilla, remarkably elegant. Starts out like a Bourbon, finishes like a Rye.
