2010 Mazzocco Cabernet Sauvignon
$24.95 (retail) Wine Club pricing reflected in receipt
If you have heard or been lucky of enough to taste the wines of Mazzocco, chances are you probably had one of their zinfandels. Currently, they have over 20 zins (out of 33 wines) listed on their website but it’s the cabernet sauvignon that we are showcasing for this month’s wine club selection.
Mazzocco is owned by Ken and Diane Wilson who also now own Wilson Winery, Pezzi King, Jason Keys and Matrix to name a few. Diane, a native Californian, is the winemaker for all of the fore mentioned wineries. In 2008, she was honored Woman Winemaker of the because of winning unprecedented back-to-back Sonoma County Harvest Fair Sweepstakes in 2006 & 2007. She has become a leader in the Sonoma County wine industry which is evident in every wine she produces. Today she oversees the operations at Mazzocco but the actual winemaking is left to Antonie Favero.
Mazzocco is a fairly new acquisition but has been around for many years originally being owned by founder Tom Mazzocco in the late 1980’s. In 1991, Mazzocco was named one of America’s best small wineries by Wine & Spirits magazine which was an honor bestowed to only 10-15 wineries a year.
Like every wine from Mazzocco this is another 100% Dry Creek Valley ESTATE wine with 96% Cabernet Sauvignon and 4% Petite Sirah blended in for depth and color. With 30% new French Oak barrels used, this wine has nice complexity and tannins without being overbearing. Definitely a drink now rather then hold for later and a crazy value for wine club members…check your receipt!
Winery Tasting Notes: “Bold and enticing. Aromas of cherry liqueur, roasted almond and cedar lead to a plush mid-palate impression having dark raspberry chocolate, spice and anise notes. The finish is seamless melding the light tannins with black tea, leather and a smidgen of black pepper.”
