Demure is one of Vailia Esh’s brood—one of her children—or that’s what you can conclude knowing that she signs off her tech sheets with: “Brought into being by Vailia Esh, Winemaker”. We’ve featured Vailia’s work with several previous selections, and every time I’m tasked with preparing notes, she impresses me as an artist. . .as corny as that may sound. Read Vailia’s bio and her motivation in creating her Desparada brand clearly reveals a very deep and intensely rooted personality: “I wanted the labels to convey that wistfulness that comes from finding your grandparents’ love notes to each other years after they’ve passed.” I’ll guess she did read those notes and expressed her feelings through her wine.
We already know Vailia can make lusty red wines. With the Demure Roussanne, she struts her stuff in the Rhone via the Santa Maria Valley from two notable vineyards: Bien Nacido and Stolpman.
Winery Tasting Notes: “The elegance of an intimate, ancient wedding on the shore of the Mediterranean. White gardenia, sun-warmed beach towel, white pine tea, powered sugar-coated Italian cookies, crunched low-tide sand, lemon grass, Key Lime concentrate, fresh tarragon and gunpowder green tea. Not oaky, not sweet. Elegant and versatile for fans of unoaked chardonnay.”
