Back in February, Michter’s announced the release of their Barrel Strength Rye Whiskey for the first time since April of 2019.  We received a NINE BOTTLEallocation which was “SOLD OUT” unless then an hour.  Fortunately, we and our faithful customers have been LARGE SUPPORTERS of MICHTER’S over the years and we were graciously awarded another ALLOCATION last week.  We could have offered these bottles up for sale straight away, but thought it was A PERFECT “5 DAYS OF DRAMS FOR DAD” OFFERING!

THE BOURBON REVIEW (2/23/2021):

“While most distilleries release their rare bourbons on a regular schedule, Michter’s is known for keeping us on our toes and only giving us their limited release line when they feel the time is right. Andrea Wilson, the brand’s Master of Maturation, works alongside Master Distiller Dan McKee to decide when exactly to release varietals like 20-Year Bourbon, Toasted Barrel Bourbon and now, Michter’s Barrel Strength Rye.

“These barrels are at just the right point to highlight the beautiful nuances of a great rye whiskey. This release is a powerhouse,” said Wilson in a press release.

“I was really happy when we tasted these barrels. This release has so much of what I look for in a rye,” added McKee.

The 2021 release of Michter’s Barrel Strength Rye will be bottled from single barrels at a cask strength that averages around 110.3 proof. The distillery tells us to look for “butterscotch and cinnamon with a hint of cherries on the nose; warming, rich, toasty vanilla and caramel up front with a dry oaky spice on the finish.”

Michter’s Notes:

Since the 1990’s, the Michter’s team has been doing pioneering work to re-establish the high quality American Rye whiskey category. The May 2015 inaugural release of Michter’s US1 Barrel Strength Rye marked yet another milestone in that quest. For maturation, the Rye distillate is entered into the barrel at 103 proof, rather than a more industry standard higher proof. Barrel entry at a lower proof of 103 rather than a higher proof costs Michter’s more money in terms of barrels and warehousing, but we believe it yields a richer, smoother, more full-bodied whiskey after proper maturation. A single barrel product, each barrel of Michter’s US1 Barrel Strength Rye is bottled at its particular alcohol level at the time of bottling. The majority of barrels in the releases range from 107 to 112 proof. To savor it is a unique experience for anyone who enjoys rye whiskey. Michter’s US1 Barrel Strength Rye is also available with personalized Fort Nelson Reserve labeling at Michter’s Fort Nelson Distillery.
