“ONE OF THE BEST ENTRY LEVEL, UNPEATED, BOURBON CASK-MATURED MALTS AVAILABLE”…

ZANDER, THE DRAMBLE, 3/13/2019

Last week CVW&S was OPENED SUNDAY for the very first time and customers flocked to our little bottle shop haven.  To commemorate our inaugural Sunday opening we decided to launch a new single day promotion, our “SUNDAY SCOTCH SPECIAL.”

With so many great spirits being introduced at CVW&S (literally daily)“SCOTCH” is a segment we definitely want to grow.  Highlighting/promoting this spirit solely on Sunday we hope will pique the curiosity of new enthusiasts all while bringing more education, opportunity and value to current connoisseurs.  Today’s first “WHISKEY-MAS” special of 2020…HAZELBURN 10-YEAR SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY, hopefully will reach both!

Hazelburn comes from Campbeltown, Scotland and is a whisky made by Springbank Distillery.  Let’s start with the basics:

(1) HAZELBURN: A Scotch Whisky produced since 2005 by Springbank in honor of Hazelburn Distillery which dated back to 1825, but was closed in 1926.  In 1866, Hazelburn had 22 employees and was producing 192,000 gallons of Whisky a year.

(2) CAMPBELTOWN, SCOTLAND: Home to three distilleries; Springbank, Glengyle (produces Kilkerran) and Glen Scotia.  Campbeltown is one of the five Scottish Whisky which include Highlands, Lowlands, Speyside and Islay.  Enthusiasts might claim that the “Islands/Coastal” would be a sub-region.  You must have a minimum of three active distilleries to be considered a “region.”   CLICK HERE TO READ MORE

(3) SINGLE MALT:  Made exclusively with malted barley, must be distilled using a “pot-still” in a single Scottish distillery and aged for a minimum of 3 years in oak casks (in Scotland).

(4) TRIPLE DISTILLATION:  Creates whiskies that are often described as smooth. By refining the spirit over three distillations rather than two, the distiller concentrates a particular fraction of aromatic and flavorful compounds, which results in a smoother taste and a subdued finish

(5) PEAT vs. UNPEATED:  The smoky aroma in whisky results from the method of drying the malt. If the malt is dried over a peat fire, the components of the peat smoke that have not been completely turned into carbon dioxide and water vapour adhere to the malt. … In contrast, the malt for unpeated whisky is dried with hot air without any smoke. – whisky.com

WHY HAZELBURN?  WHY NOT!

Again, this is a great “entry-level” Scotch, but don’t kid yourself, one taste and you will find a very sophisticated palate of flavors happening from start to finish.  This particular bottling being “unpeated” is a nice crossover for WHISKEY drinkers to SCOTCH WHISKY, as it won’t be overwhelmingly smoky.  That said, with all Springbank’s expressions, you can always taste their distinct Scottish terroir whether it’s Springbank, Longrow, Hazelburn or even Kilkerran (yes, they make that too).  This truly is one of our favorite brands in the shop…not just for Whisky, but ALL SPIRITS IN THE SHOP!  Since it’s the season of sharing….

HOW DOES IT TASTE?  DELICIOUS.

NOSE: Stewed pears and baked apples are followed by honeycomb and fudge notes.

PALATE: A lovely and rich whisky with vanilla and honey flavours, liquorice follows with a refreshing zestiness.

FINISH: A refined milk chocolate cream finish that is oily and chewy.
